The Proteas white-ball captain, Temba Bavuma, has conceded that it has been a challenging time for the national side, despite all the on-field success.

In recent time the Proteas have started to return to winning ways and claimed a 2-1 Test series win over India, while also securing a 3-0 One-Day International series whitewash against the team from the subcontinent.

The national side will head to New Zealand in February and there is still a lot of uncertainty ahead of the tour for two Tests.

On Wednesday the under-fire coach, Mark Boucher, will appear before a disciplinary commission to face charges leveled against him and he could get the axe.

Bavuma said that it has not been easy leading the team.

“Look, I don't think it's easy to be honest. There are a lot of dynamics that you need to manage. For me, the biggest thing is to keep cricket the main focus among the guys.

“I hate to bring this up, but it's been a challenging period for the team, for the players, for particular members of team management. There's been a lot of scrutiny surrounding the team and the organisation.

“To manage the conversations that happen within the change room, to ensure that our energy is 100% towards performing, for me that’s been the biggest challenge.

“It’s been a big responsibility, but it's also been a bit of a privilege as well.

“It’s not an easy one leading the South African national team.”

On 17 February, the Proteas face the Black Caps at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch in the 1st Test.
