The Proteas captain, Dean Elgar, has backed the left-arm seamer, Marco Jansen, a possible future all-rounder. The 21-year-old Knight, Jansen, made his Test debut last month during the 2-1 series win over India in South Africa.

The Klerksdorp-born Jansen has proven that he is no mug with the bat either and has also stated that he would like to be a recognised all-rounder.

Elgar said that for now he would prefer if the lanky seamer focuses on his bowling.

“If he's thinking of joining the batting pool, that's quite deep at the moment and if he wants to be a batter, I think that he's selling himself a bit short.

“He's skilled at bowling and he's got all the attributes working in his favour. He’s got pace, he’s got bounce and he can swing a ball.

“He's someone I can go to for a hostile ball. I'd hate for him to lose that ability of being a genuine all-rounder.

“He definitely has the character of becoming a great all-rounder one day, bearing in mind that he’s only 21-years-old and actually learning the game at international level.

“That's not easy for a young guy.”

Elgar added that the talented bowler has the batting ability, however, was honest in saying that his game with the willow still needs work and that will take time.

New Zealand and the Proteas will battle it out from next week Thursday in the 1st Test at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
