Erwee could have a big role to play at Kingsmead─── MORGAN PIEK 15:54 Wed, 30 Mar 2022
The pitch at Kingsmead could pose a challenge to the Proteas and Bangladesh in the 1st Test that gets underway Thursday morning.
It’s the first time in more than three years that a Test will be played in Durban, and the contest will be on a new pitch.
The Proteas will want to be building on their good summer which saw them beating India and playing to a draw against the Black Caps in New Zealand.
During the 2nd Test against the Black Caps in Christchurch, Sarel Erwee scored his maiden century for South Africa, in what was also just his second Test for the country.
The spinner, Keshav Maharaj, told OFM Sport that Erwee could have a big impact on his home ground, especially because he would know the conditions and what to expect.
“He has been a great guy to have in the change room and a great asset to our squad.
“We have our figures crossed with his knowledge of the conditions and it being his home ground. I'm sure that is enough motivation for him for a big performance.
“A few seasons ago he scored a massive hundred over here to take us across the line in a game.
“I am sure that he would want to replicate much of that performance in this Test.”
Keegan Petersen, who missed out on the tour to the Land of the Long White Cloud, will in his turn be keen to continue with the form he showed with the willow against India, and as a current Dolphins player would also have some better understanding of the conditions.
Play at Kingsmead is scheduled to start at 10:00 on Thursday morning.
