Van Niekerk set for a return against England─── MORGAN PIEK 07:24 Tue, 31 May 2022
The Proteas Women’s coach, Hilton Moreeng, is hoping to have their regular captain, Dané van Niekerk, fit and available for their upcoming tour of England.
Van Niekerk fractured her ankle in January after slipping on a wet surface at home. This led to the inspirational all-rounder all missing out on the World Cup in New Zealand.
In addition, Van Niekerk's wife, Marizanne Kapp, as well as Lizelle Lee, Sinalo Jafta and Masabata Klaas, miss out on the tour of Ireland due to illness and they too could return against the English.
While the squad for England the Commonwealth Games hasn’t been finalised, Moreeng said he is hoping to have Van Niekerk back soon.
“With Marizanne Kapp, Lizelle Lee, Sinalo Jafta and Masabata Klaas, we'll be looking for them to join us in the England tour if everything goes well," Moreeng told reporters on Sunday.
“Dané is still in her recovery and if all goes well, she'll join us for the second leg of the England series, which is the T20 series. She could come earlier, but we're taking it one step at a time.
“All are on track for the England tour, but our squad is in good health and everyone is ready to go with the first assignment against Ireland.”
Ireland and South Africa play in the first T20I on Friday with play at Pembroke, with this match starting at 17:30.
