The Proteas white-ball captain, Temba Bavuma, has defended the decision not to select the teenage sensation, Dewald Brevis, for the tour to India.

The Proteas are en route to the subcontinent for the series of five T20 Internationals.

The destructive batter Brevis has impressed since representing South Africa at last years’ under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup in the West Indies.

Many would argue that the 19-year-old should have been selected for the series against India.

Bavuma said the youngster still needs time to develop.

“He is another exciting prospect and he set the world alight with his performances in the U19 World Cup and in the IPL as well.

“In all fairness to him, he hasn't played any first-class cricket in South Africa. We need to allow him to grow within his game and start to understand it. Think it'll only be fair to allow him to play some first-class games.

“I think there'll be a lot of pressure to throw him into the national set-up and make big plays in the team.

“He'll be treated like any young prospect coming onto the scene and he'll be looked after. But I think he should be given time and space to go and hone his game within our system so he can ease into the international scene.”

India and South Africa will battle it in Delhi on 9 June in the 1st T20 International.
