Rain denies the Proteas in Hobart─── MORGAN PIEK 15:19 Mon, 24 Oct 2022
A valiant 47 not out by Quinton de Kock was not enough to lead South Africa to victory in their opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup being played in Australia.
Rain prevented South Africa from completing their shortened match against Zimbabwe, denying them victory at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
The match was reduced to nine overs per side after a two-hour and 35-minute delay.
Zimbabwe recovered from being 19 for 4 to set South Africa a target of 80 in nine overs, which was then reduced to 64 in seven overs due to another weather interruption.
South Africa were well ahead of their five-over DLS par score when the players were called off for rain for the second time, but they had only faced three overs at that point - a T20 match is only completed when both teams have faced at least five overs.
Batting first, Zimbabwe, managed to score 79/5 in their allotted nine overs thanks to a rear-guard action by Wesley Madhevere who scored an impressive 35 runs.
Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the Proteas bowlers with 2/20 in two overs, while Wayne Parnell and Anrich Nortjé each claimed one scalp.
De Kock hit eight fours and one six in his knock from 18 balls, while the captain Temba Bavuma scored two not out from two deliveries.
When the umpires called the players from the field, South Africa was 51/0 after three overs.
With the time lapsed on the clock to complete the game, it was deemed as a no result and the teams shared the points.
Earlier in the day at the Bellerive Oval, Bangladesh beat the Netherlands by nine runs.
South Africa’s next game at the World Cup is on Thursday when they face Bangladesh at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
