Mpitsang defends the selection of De Bruyn─── MORGAN PIEK 14:05 Tue, 15 Nov 2022
The CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang, has defended the call to include the Titans batter, Theunis de Bruyn, in the Proteas Test squad for the upcoming tour to Australia.
De Bruyn has been called up to the Proteas for the first time since 2019.
The former Knights captain has played in 12 Tests since making his debut against New Zealand in 2017, but he has a poor average of just 19.45.
The former Free State and Proteas seam bowler, Mpitsang, said that De Bruyn will bring experience in the absence of Keegan Petersen.
“Theunis is an experienced player. He's been part of the national setup before and a guy we've monitored extensively. He had a good season last year.
“If you look at our batting line-up, there's a lack of experience even with Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma back. We needed some extra experience.
“It’s also true older batters make better decisions and are calmer, and in Theunis’ case he probably understands his game better now as well.
“The last time we played in England it was only Dean who had real experience, especially when Rassie got injured and Temba wasn’t available. So, it’s massive to have them back.”
The 1st Test between Australia and the Proteas will be played from 17 December.
Proteas touring squad - Dean Elgar (captain), Temba Bavuma, Gerald Coetzee, Theunis de Bruyn, Sarel Erwee, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Glenton Stuurman, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne, Khaya Zondo.
