Proteas to tune in mentally for World Cup semi─── MORGAN PIEK 16:35 Wed, 22 Feb 2023
The Proteas' opening batter, Laura Wolvaardt, has called for mental toughness when they face England on Friday in the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Cape Town.
The Proteas will be targeting becoming the first senior national side to reach a World Cup final, but it will be tough going in against the world’s second-ranked team.
Wolvaardt, who scored 66 not out against Bangladesh last night, said it’s all about tuning in mentally.
"They're a quality side and we’ve lost many semi-finals against them, which is not ideal. They play a very explosive and attacking brand of cricket.
"We’re just going to have to have some good discussions about how we can use that against them. If anything, it gives us a bit more freedom to know that we are going to have to put a lot of runs on the board early on and get off to a better start than what we did.
"If you look at our last semi-final in the 50-over World Cup, it was just a total mental lapse. We had our worst game of the tournament in that game.
"We had a good tournament up until that point, and I think we just need to have a lot of discussions about how to stay mentally strong. We have the talent and the skill, and it's just a mental game in the semi-final."
On Thursday afternoon at 15:00 Australia will face India at Newlands in the first semi-final, while Friday’s game will be played at the same venue.
