'I'm very happy for Coetzee, he deserves it' - Nortjé─── MORGAN PIEK 08:09 Thu, 02 Mar 2023
The Proteas seamer, Anrich Nortjé, has expressed his delight for Gerald Coetzee after the young Itec Knights fast bowler took his first Test wicket for South Africa on Wednesday morning.
Coetzee got in on the action at SuperSport Park on day two of the 1st Test against the West Indies as the visitors were bowled out for 212 runs in their first innings.
The 22-year-old Coetzee had the opening batter, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, caught for 22 runs at gully through a sublime catch by the North West Dragons all-rounder, Senuran Muthusamy.
The product of St Andrews school in Bloemfontein also trapped Shannon Gabriel lbw for 7 runs to wrap up the Windies first innings.
The seasoned Nortjé, who led the charge with the ball for South Africa, said that after all the hard work that Coetzee has put in, he deserved his first Test wicket.
"I'm very happy for him, he deserves it," said the seasoned paceman who took a five-for on day two.
"He has been bowling lots of overs and he has been bowling at a high level since domestically. He was with us for England with the white ball and he was with us for Australia with the red ball.
"Seeing him develop well is nice. Charl Langeveldt has helped him a little bit here and there, sorting out little things.
"I'm really happy for him to finally get the wicket. We could all see the celebration and how happy he was after the first wicket.
"I'm sure that it's going to be a long career for him going forward."
Coetzee finished with figures of 2/45 in 12 overs.
South Africa will resume their second innings on 49/4 on Thursday morning. They hold a 179-run lead over the team from the Caribbean.
