The star Proteas batter, Laura Wolvaardt, will get her crack at playing in the inaugural Women’s Premier League. The opening batter didn’t get picked during the recent auction for the tournament and this raises eyebrows.

She will however play now as she has been called-up by the Gujarat Giants as injury cover for the Australian great, Beth Mooney.

Mooney, who was the captain of the Giants, suffered a knee injury during their tournament opener against the Mumbai Indians.

Wolvaardt was in Pakistan playing in PCB Women’s League exhibition matches when she got the SOS call to head to India.

"I want to thank the PCB for this opportunity to play in the Women's League exhibition matches," said Wolvaardt.

"It has been an incredible short journey, but I have loved the experience. The team has been amazing and I have felt so welcoming," Wolvaardt said in a statement released by the PCB on Wednesday.

"I wish both sides the best of luck with the rest of the series. I am sure both sides will strive hard and they will do well and learn a lot from the experience they will get from the matches.

"I cannot wait to return to Pakistan in September with the South Africa's national women's team and learn more about this amazing country."

During the recent ICC Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa the 23-year-old Wolvaardt was the leading run-scorer with 230 runs.
