There’s work to do still - Walter─── MORGAN PIEK 08:52 Tue, 04 Apr 2023
The Proteas coach Rob Walter is happy with the progress of the team since February, following the changing of the guard. In February, Walter came in as the white-ball coach, while Shukri Conrad came in as the Test coach.
In that time the Proteas beat England and the Netherlands in an One-Day International series, while they also beat the West Indies in a Test series.
Walter said there is still work to do, but they are on the right track.
“It’s always good to get a series win, so the spirits are high,” said Walter as the Proteas closed their season on a high.
“Most importantly were the 20 points in the context of qualifying for the World Cup was hugely important, so we’re happy we got the job done there.
“We played a portion of the second game really well, but we were off the mark in certain other areas so there’s work to do still. But we’ll take the win for now.”
“I’ve kept a close eye on South African cricket over the last few years, so I’m very aware of the people that are playing but the one thing that has really run through over the last couple of weeks is the actual resources and potential of the side, which is really significant.
“It’s just about harnessing that properly as we move forward.”
The Proteas will know next month if they have to play in the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe for the ICC Cricket World Cup.
Ireland will be hosting Bangladesh is a three-match One-Day International series. South Africa has virtually qualified for the World Cup in India automatically, however, should the Irish manage a 3-0 series whitewash against the Tigers, the Proteas will have to play in the qualifying tournament.
