The Proteas great, Mignon van der Merwe, is excited to continue her cricketing career in Bloemfontein after signing a contract to play for the Free State.

The signing of Van der Merwe is a major boost for the Free State Women’s team who recently got promoted to Division 1. In addition to being a player, she will also act as a mentor, especially for the younger players in the province.

The former national captain recently retired from all forms of international cricket following a stellar career which earned her legendary status in the sport across the globe.

Van der Merwe has also recently been a cricket commentator and she was still on air as recently as Thursday when the Proteas Women beat New Zealand by 7-wickets in Pietermaritzburg in the second One-Day International.

Van der Merwe told OFM Sport that she is keen to continue her career at the Free State not only as a player, but she wants to give back to the sport she considers a lifestyle.

“I am thrilled to be joining Free State Cricket. This is not just a new chapter in my cricketing journey, but a chance to give back to the sport that has given me so much,” said Van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe will be on debut for the Free State on Saturday during their season opening One-Day Cup game against the Lions in Johannesburg.
