Proteas win second Test and take series against West Indies─── ILSE SMALBERGER 08:04 Sun, 18 Aug 2024
“Rabada took three wickets in 16 overs and finished one wicket short of the 300 Test-wicket mark.”
The Proteas have won the second Test against the West Indies in Guyana by 40 runs. It was also a 10th successive Test series win against the men in maroon.
South Africa managed a decent 263 in their second innings on day three, with notable contributions by Tony de Zorzi (39), Aidan Markram (51), Kyle Verreyne (59), and Wiaan Mulder (34). But the South Africans struggled against a searing bowling attack from Jayden Seales, who took six wickets in the innings.
The Windies’ second innings started off slowly and they limped to 104 for 6, before a 77-run stand between Gudakesh Motie and Joshua Da Silva put them within spitting distance of a win. However, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada denied the hosts the chance of a historic victory.

In the process, Maharaj became the most successful spinner in South Africa’s Test history with 171 wickets, including five in this match and 13 in the series. Rabada took three wickets in 16 overs and finished one wicket short of the 300 Test-wicket mark.
Mulder took six wickets in the Test, scored an important 34 in the second innings and shared in an 85-run sixth-wicket partnership with Verreynne to set up South Africa’s win, earning him the Man of the Match title. Maharaj was elected Player of the Series.
The first Test in Trinidad, robbed of almost 150 overs by rain, finished in a draw, which means South Africa won the series 1-0.
