The Proteas have been dealt a major setback on the eve of their One-Day International series against Australia, which got underway on Tuesday morning (19/8) in Cairns, Northern Queensland.
Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the entire three-match series after suffering an ankle injury. The severity of the injury remains unclear at this stage. Following inflammation in his ankle, Rabada underwent a scan on Monday, which confirmed he would not be fit to play in the crucial series.

Cricket South Africa confirmed that while the star paceman will not feature, he will remain in Australia with the squad.
“The 30-year-old underwent a scan on Monday, which confirmed the extent of the injury,” CSA said in a statement. He will remain in Australia and undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the Proteas’ medical staff.”

Teenage left-arm sensation Kwena Maphaka, who was initially only selected for the three-match T20 International series, has stayed on tour and will provide cover for Rabada in the ODIs.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning at Cazaly’s Stadium, Australia won the toss and elected to field first. The Proteas handed debuts to two players in the 50-over format. The in-form batter Dewald Brevis and spinner Prenelan Subrayen, were both named in the starting XI.
