The Free State Cricket Union lost another stalwart on Tuesday with the untimely passing of Petri Watson, who served as an administrator for many years.
Watson passed away late on Tuesday evening after undergoing two emergency surgeries, following a sudden illness. She was a true iron-woman of Free State cricket, beginning her journey years ago as a ticket seller and later becoming a daily pillar of the union.
She will be remembered as someone you could rely on, share a joke with, enjoy a conversation with, and have long, meaningful talks. Her passing leaves an immense void in the union, as everyone, from management to players, relied on the woman affectionately known as Mama Petri.

In July 2022, Watson’s best friend, Judith Vorster, who also worked for many years at Free State Cricket, passed away suddenly. They were such close friends that Petri named her daughter, Judy, in her honour.
Watson was particularly proud of her daughter’s achievements in athletics, excelling in discus and shot put. She always beamed with pride over Judith’s accomplishments.
‘Pillar of strength, kindness, and dedication’
The Free State Cricket Union expressed its condolences following her passing:
“It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the passing of Petri Watson, the heartbeat of Free State Cricket Union.
“Petri was more than just a colleague; she was a pillar of strength, kindness, and dedication. Her passion for cricket and love for people touched everyone around her. Her warmth, tireless commitment, and unwavering spirit made her an irreplaceable part of our cricket family.

“On behalf of the Free State Cricket Union, we extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones during this time of grief. May you find comfort in the beautiful memories she leaves behind and in knowing how deeply she was admired and loved by all of us.
“Rest in peace, Petri. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone at Free State Cricket.”
Watson is undoubtedly a legend of sport in the Free State and will be remembered as such. She is survived by her husband, Allen, and three children — Judy, Stefan, and AJ.
Rest in peace, Petri.
