The Knights are locked and loaded to get their 2025/26 domestic cricket season underway on Thursday when they welcome the Eastern Storm to the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

The two sides will clash in Division 2 of the CSA 4-Day Series, marking the start of a massive season for the Free Staters. The Knights find themselves in the lower tier again after being relegated, but they’re determined to fight their way back into the top flight.

Two of the Knights’ new signings could make their debuts in what promises to be a tricky outing against an Easterns team that thrashed Limpopo Impalas by an innings and 63 runs in their opening fixture.

Allrounder Ruan Haasbroek, one of the fresh recruits, is expected to play a key role this season as he fills the gap left by the departure of Dian Forrester. Haasbroek brings valuable experience and versatility to the squad, with the added ability to keep wicket and even take on the captaincy role if required.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Haasbroek said he has settled in well in Bloemfontein and is eager to get started.

“Yeah, I'm very excited. It’s an exciting bunch of guys – honestly, I’ve been enjoying it so much. It’s been great to come out here, play here, and represent such an awesome franchise,” he said.

Haasbroek added that being an allrounder doesn’t feel like added pressure but rather a chance to make a greater impact.

“It just opens up more ways to influence the game and add value to the team. Ultimately, you just want to win games for the team. It’s a great privilege to be able to do a couple of extra things, but at the end of the day, it’s about getting results.”

With expectations high on the Knights to deliver in Division 2 – given their depth and experience – Haasbroek said there’s plenty of belief in the squad.

“I think we’re very confident. It’s a really experienced group of players. Easterns have been playing good cricket, and they’re a strong side, so it would be awesome to start on the front foot and build momentum for the rest of the tournament. But yes, we’re definitely confident and excited too.”

While the Knights have set themselves several goals for the season, Haasbroek’s personal focus is simple: Put the team back where they belong.

“Just to win games for the team – that’s my biggest motivation. Win games and get us back into Division 1. That’s the ultimate goal, and we’re going to keep pushing hard for it.”

The first ball between the Knights and the Storm at the Mangaung Oval is set to be bowled at 10:00 on Thursday.
