Cricket South Africa has congratulated Proteas captain Temba Bavuma after he was named among the TIME100 Most Influential Sports People of 2026, a prestigious honour awarded by global publication TIME Magazine.

The recognition is the latest milestone in a remarkable career that has extended far beyond the boundaries of the cricket field. This cements Bavuma’s status as one of South Africa’s most influential sporting figures and respected leaders.

Since making his international debut in 2014, Bavuma has consistently broken barriers and inspired generations of aspiring cricketers. His journey from talented youngster to national captain has been marked by resilience, determination and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

As captain, Bavuma has ushered in a new era for South African cricket. Under his leadership, the Proteas have flourished in the test arena, with the skipper boasting one of the most impressive captaincy records in modern cricket. South Africa won 11 of his first twelve tests in charge, a testament to his calm leadership and ability to bring the best out of those around him.

The TIME100 accolade arrives almost exactly one year after one of the defining moments of Bavuma’s career and South African cricket history. In June 2025, he led the Proteas to a historic victory in the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s in London, ending a more than two-decade wait for a major ICC trophy and delivering a moment that united cricket fans across the country.

That triumph not only secured Bavuma’s place in the history books but also reinforced his reputation as a leader capable of guiding South Africa to the biggest prizes in world cricket.

His influence has not been limited to captaincy. Bavuma remains one of the game’s premier batters and continues to feature among the world’s elite, earning a place inside the ICC Top 10 test batting rankings in 2026. Combining technical excellence with a composed and humble demeanour, he has become a role model both on and off the field.

CSA chief executive officer Pholetsi Moseki praised Bavuma for the global recognition, describing the honour as richly deserved.

“On behalf of Cricket South Africa and the entire cricketing fraternity, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Temba on this incredible and well-deserved recognition.

“Being named among the TIME100 Most Influential Sports People is a powerful acknowledgement of his impact globally, both on and off the field, as he continues to inspire young cricketers and South Africans from all walks of life.

“Temba’s journey is one of perseverance and purpose, and we are immensely proud to see him receive acclaimed recognition for the influence he continues to have in shaping the future of the game and society.”

For South African cricket supporters, Bavuma’s inclusion on the TIME100 list is more than a personal achievement. It is recognition of a leader who has carried the hopes of a nation with dignity, broken new ground, and helped restore the Proteas to the summit of world cricket.

As his influence continues to grow on the global stage, Bavuma remains a powerful symbol of what can be achieved through perseverance, humility and exceptional leadership.
