Inglis suffered a fractured right index finger during Australia’s 67-run defeat to the Proteas in the opening ODI at Kingsmead in Durban on Thursday.

The injury is another untimely setback for the 31-year-old, who has endured his fair share of misfortune on the injury front. Inglis will return to Perth for scans, with his availability for the upcoming three-Test series against South Africa now also uncertain.

Inglis sustained the fracture while keeping wicket in Durban, but remarkably played on and completed the innings behind the stumps. He then walked out at his familiar No. 4 position with Australia chasing 297 for victory.

However, his stay at the crease was brief. Inglis made just three runs from eight deliveries before becoming one of six Australian batters dismissed by left-arm spin, falling while attempting a reverse sweep.

Cricket Australia confirmed that Inglis will miss the remaining two ODIs, with Alex Carey taking over the wicketkeeping duties.

“The West Australian will return home for scans with his availability for the three-match Test series subject to further assessment and progress,” Cricket Australia said.

No replacement has been named for the ODI squad, with Australia facing South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday before the series concludes in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

Inglis has a history of frustrating injury setbacks. He missed the 2022 T20 World Cup after a freak accident involving a golf club resulted in a deep cut to his hand. More recently, he has battled back spasms and suffered several calf strains during 2025.

For the Proteas, Inglis’ absence provides another opportunity to put Australia under pressure as they look to wrap up the ODI series on Sunday.

South Africa will head to the Highveld with a 1-0 lead and plenty of confidence after a commanding performance in Durban. A victory at the Wanderers would seal the series with one match still to play.

Sunday’s clash at the Bullring will also have a special significance as the Proteas host their annual Pink Day match in support of breast cancer awareness. The Wanderers is expected to be awash with pink as fans get behind an important cause, while the Proteas will be hoping to turn the occasion into another memorable day on the field.
