The Proteas’ hamstring woes continue with Tony de Zorzi now also ruled out of the upcoming Test against Australia in Durban.

De Zorzi sustained an injury in the last and final ODI against Australia in Potchefstroom on Thursday evening (30/09). The 29-year-old left the field and was not able to bat during the Proteas’ innings.

He joins fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman and Kwena Maphaka, who have all suffered hamstring strains over the past month.

However, South African skipper Temba Bavuma said there is nothing the team can do about it and they trust the medical process will follow its course.

“It's a blow, obviously, within our plans,” Bavuma said after the Potchefstroom match.

“Tony fulfils a certain role. But there’s an opportunity for someone else to come in and do the business when they need it. To be honest, there’s no point in getting more frustrated at the situation. That’s not going to help any bit. We’ve had conversations with the medical team. They’re doing the best that they can.”

Anrich Nortje has since been brought into the Test squad to strengthen the bowling attack. According to Bavuma, Nortje not only brings a wealth of experience to the team, but is also a positive force on the field.

“I think the guy even, if he's not on the field, his presence within the team environment is super important. So, to have him contribute with these pearls of wisdom, we’re looking forward to that,” he said.

“I’ve had chats with him. He’s very much optimistic.”
