South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli will be heading to this week's 148th Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland with a renewed sense of confidence after winning the John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour.

Frittelli earned his maiden title on the PGA on Sunday with 21 under par for a two-stroke victory at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.

The win means that Frittelli now has a two-year exemption on both the PGA and European Tours, and conceded that the possibility of perhaps having to head back to the Q-School was on his mind.

Frittelli added that he will be banking on his previous experience at the Irish Open when he tees it up in the world’s oldest Open.

“It is a bonus to be playing in the Open Championship again. I’ve played in the last two, so I am super excited to get over to Northern Ireland and play there.

“I actually played at Royal Portrush during the 2013 Irish Open. I’ve seen Portrush, so I am probably one step ahead of most of the other guys and I won’t have to play as many practice holes.

“I think that I can compete there. Hopefully get the ball rolling, hopefully, we get some good weather and make some birdies.”

The 2019 Open Championship tees off on Thursday.
