The Spanish duo of Alejandro Del Rey and Scott Fernandez, along with South Africa's Luke Jerling, were the joint early leaders of the inaugural Mangaung Open in Bloemfontein.
The trio, who all played at the Bloemfontein Golf Club, took the lead on 9-under-par 63 to hold a two-stroke lead.
Justin Walters of South Africa, Emilio Cuartero Blanco of Spain, and Jacopo Vecchi of Italy Fossa all completed rounds of 7-under-par 65 for a share of fourth.
The Bloemfonteiner, MJ Viljoen, finished on 6-under par along with Hennie Otto, Christopher Mivis of Belgium, and Jarand Ekeland Arnoy of Norway.
The Bloemfontein local, Wilco Nienaber, shot even-par in his first nine at Schoeman Park, with two bogeys and two birdies. He finished his round strong on the back nine by making five birdies to finish on five-under-par 67.
Heavy rain did halt proceedings in Bloemfontein with half of the field still out on the course.
