The 2010 champion, Louis Oosthuizen, is feeling confident and upbeat ahead of the 150th Open Championship which tees off at St Andrews in Scotland on Thursday.

Oosthuizen is the leading South African to tee it up at the oldest Open in golf and the flagship event of the sport.

Oosthuizen will be playing in the prestigious major for the 16th time in his career, but is particularly excited about the 17-year-old amateur, Aldrich Potgieter, who plays out of his academy.

“What a talent,” said Oosthuizen about the young amateur.

“What has achieved already and he hits the ball a long way. I'm the old guy here in the group, but what a golfer.

“It's great to the see the talent that South Africa is producing.

“I'm trying to just show him a little on the lines to play off the tee and to teach him not to be scared off hitting it left on this golf course.

“You've got the double fairways here and you want to avoid the crucial misses off of the tee.”

Potgieter will be on the tee from 13:42 on Thursday along with the seasoned Swede, Henrik Stenson and Russell Henley of the USA.

The former Bloemfontein professional, Dean Burmester, will be the first South African on the tee on Thursday morning when he tees off at 7:57.
