Lawrence reigns supreme at BMW Internationial Open─── MORGAN PIEK 09:12 Mon, 26 Jun 2023
Thriston Lawrence capped off an outstanding golfing weekend for South Africa by winning the BMW International Open at the Munich Eichenried Golf Club in Germany.
Winning the tournament sees Lawrence become just the second South African win the event after the great Ernie Els.
Lawrence carded a final round of three-under-par 69 for a tournament total of 13-under-par and a one-stroke win over Joost Luiten of the Netherlands.
It was a tough round for the now four-time winner on the DP World Tour with Lawrence sinking eight birdies, but with that came five bogeys.
Lawrence said winning his fourth DP World Tour event is special, especially seeing that the name of the Big Easy is on the trophy as well.
“It means a lot,” after becoming just the second South African to win this trophy after the great Ernie Els.
“There's been a lot of hard work. I went to America for six weeks and made one cut - this game is not easy. It was a real boost today and I really gave it my all. I feel sorry for Joost, I know how tough this game is.
“I don't know why I'm so emotional but obviously it just shows that it means the world and to get my fourth victory in Germany is unbelievable.
“I seem to win a lot of events that Ernie has won. It's special, he's obviously the ultimate hero for me. I grew up in that era where he was on top of the world and it's very special to get my name along alongside him.”
Wilco Nienaber of Bloemfontein and Justin Walters both finished on four-under-par for a share of 26th.
