“I was actually kind of emotional after the putt lipped in. It has been a while since I've won - I kept saying it all week. I just need to stay in my lane. And man, was it hard to stay in my lane today. ”

Xander Schauffele of the USA has the won his first major title after clinching the PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky.

The reigning Olympic champion carded a final round of six-under-par 65 for finish the major on 21-under-par for a one-stroke victory.

Bryson Dechambeau finished in second on 20-under-par, while Viktor Hovland of Norway finished in third on 18-under-par.

Schauffele said winning the Wanamaker Trophy is a sweet feeling.

“I looked at it as someone that is trying really hard and needs more experience,” said Schauffele.

“All those close calls for me, even last week, that sort of feeling, it gets to you at some point and it just makes this even sweeter

“I told Todd Lewis, he asked me sort of, you know, how I felt about the week and I said, it'll make my next one even sweeter. I know it's a major, but just winning in general for me this is a sweet as it gets.

“I was actually kind of emotional after the putt lipped in. It has been a while since I've won - I kept saying it all week. I just need to stay in my lane.

“And man, was it hard to stay in my lane today. But I tried all day to just keep focus on what I'm trying to do.”

Meanwhile, Dean Burmester, of Bloemfontein finished in a share of 12th on 12-under-par for his best finish at a major, and he has earned an invite for next year.

Responding to his performance at the major, Burmester, said he looks forward to returning next year, but now it’s time to return home for some family time.

“What an awesome week at the PGA Championship and thanks to the PGA for the opportunity,” said Burmester.

“I loved being up there and in contention for a while and can’t wait for the next major.

“Tied 12th gets me back next year and I'm already looking forward to it.

“Thanks for all the support, now looking forward to getting back to South Africa to be with my family.”

Erik van Rooyen was the next best South African at the major and he had to settle for a share of 53rd on three-under-par. Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Ryan van Velzen and Thriston Lawrence all failed to make the cut.
