Former Bloemfontein professional Dean Burmester is locked and loaded ahead of this week’s PGA Championship, which takes place at the renowned Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina.

Burmester is one of six South Africans in the field for the year’s second major.

He’ll be joined by compatriots Daniel van Tonder, Erik van Rooyen, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Thriston Lawrence, and Garrick Higgo, all hoping to make their mark on one of golf’s biggest stages. The 35-year-old, who impressed with a tie for 11th at the 2024 Open Championship, believes Quail Hollow plays to his strengths.

“A lot of people told me before I came here that the course would suit my game,” said Burmester. “Now, having played a full 18 holes, I definitely agree.

The layout is fairly generous off the tee, quite wide, but there’s thick rough and firm greens. It’s a ball striker’s course, and it rewards longer hitters. I don’t exactly lack distance, so it certainly plays into my hands.”

Burmester, who now plays on the LIV Golf circuit, added that he’s feeling refreshed and ready for the challenge after taking some time off.

“To be honest, I probably needed the week off. I’ve been travelling across multiple time zones recently, so a bit of rest was important,” he said. “I’m feeling good now, got in some solid work on Monday, and really looking forward to getting underway on Thursday.”

The 107th edition of the PGA Championship tees off this Thursday, with all eyes on Quail Hollow as golf’s elite battle it out for major glory.
