NC Police commended for fitness | News Article

Criminals in the Northern Cape will unlikely show police officers their heels as the NC SAPS were the team to beat at the National Fitness Championship last week.

Nine provinces took part in the competition at the SANDF Sports Grounds in Kimberley which involved various obstacle courses such as wall climbing, hurdles and tyre lifting. The NC team took 27 medals of which 14 were gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze. Teams were made up of about forty women and men. Second place went to Gauteng and third position to the defending Champions, the Eastern Cape. According to police’s Sergio Kock, events like these are important because a fit policeman enhances crime prevention.

Transcript: According to Kock, winning the National Functional Fitness Championship was a big milestone for the province. “We are very proud of the Northern Cape team together with the coaches, managers and everybody who put this thing together,” said Kock. The team secured first place after hard work and training.

Four members of the Northern Cape has also been chosen to represent the SAPS National Functional Fitness team. These members are known as Abongile Zenzile, Jean Combrink, Matshabela Seale and Marlie Strydom.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Risimati Shivuri, thanked and applauded all participants and also commended the Northern Cape for a job well done. Physical and emotional fitness is a must for the police, as this ensures the enhancement of service delivery to the community.
