Making the leap from kindergarten to grade 1 and high school to University? Here’s how you can make the transition easy and fun.
Greshma (Buzzing Bubs), explains the literature on early education supports the idea that for many children and their parents, moving from preschool to kindergarten is challenging, but that moving from a relatively warm, caring, child-centered kindergarten to a potentially more intimidating and rigid first-grade classroom is also quite challenging.
In fact, this phase of transition has been dubbed a crucial one for the social and intellectual growth of young children. Parents and school administrators frequently have the difficult responsibility of addressing the cognitive, social, and emotional changes that children go through during this crucial period of transition.
What changes during Grade 1?
- Half-day to full day
- Eating lunch at school every day. Lunches return half-eaten.
- Having their own desks with their own things instead of tables and carpet squares
- New teachers and new friends
- Varied teaching strategies and pedagogy
- Shorter playtime
Here are some tips for parents to help children in a smooth transition from Kindergarten to First Grade before school starts:
1. Emotional preparation is the key to first-grade readiness. Before your child enters first grade, you can help him or her with the abilities on this checklist. Make sure to introduce the concept of a large school to your child in a playful and informal manner.
2. Make learning math and reading fun for your youngster by coming up with novel approaches. Point out words and letters while you drive or stroll outside, take them to the store and count the things. Have a lot of discussions. Oral language is substantially influenced by all of this.
3. Get to know the institution. Visit the school with your child before the start of the school year so that they are familiar with the route, the structure, and the surroundings. The majority of schools offer Orientation or Open Days for parents; make sure your child attends, and allow him or her to meet the teacher and tour the classroom.
4. Get the routine going early. When it comes to the daily pattern of rising early, eating breakfast, bringing a snack, and heading to school, it is always a good idea to start early.
5. Make an effort to be organized. Encourage the kids to do tasks on their own, such as packing their bags, putting away their playthings, and putting their pencils back in the box before leaving school for home.
6. Buying new school supplies at the store? Let the kids decide which products they want! Or at the very least accompany you when you make your purchase, as they must label their items for school!
