Polokwane - Ten men and a woman have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Limpopo warrant officer who was shot and killed at a funeral in Jane Furse on Saturday after he was mistaken for a criminal, police said on Sunday.
The group, aged between 26 and 48, were arrested throughout Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday morning, said spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto.
Warrant Office Boshego Joel Seloga's gun and ammunition were buried in the ground during the arrests, she said.
The 57-year-old was part of a team of detectives tracking a suspect wanted for crimes committed in Brits.
The suspect was located in Madibeng at the funeral of a resident who had been killed last week. When police tried to apprehend him, he called out for help.
"Members of the community rushed to his assistance and mistook the police members for criminals," Otto said.
Seloga was chased and then cornered by community members who grabbed his pistol and shot him in the head. He died instantly.
Police said they also suspected some members of the community might have been involved in the murder of the person who was being buried.
The group was expected to appear in court soon.
