High hopes for first 50-50 pilots | News Article

Christiana - The three inaugural 50-50 pilot projects have been hailed by Government as a shining example of the empowerment of farm workers.

Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Mcebisi Skwatsha, visited York Agric Farms in Christiana, North West, last week.

This is one of three farms purchased by Government in partnership with the Calby Employee Share Trust, the Diamant Agric Employee Share Trust and the Belle Rive Employee Share Trust.

According to a statement, Government spent about R24-million purchasing a total of 1960 hectares of land. Farm workers are set to enjoy a 51% share in the potato and onion processing plant and the remaining 49% will be vested with the farmer.

Skwatsha says government wants workers to be co-owners who debate dividends, not wages.

He adds that the 50/50 policy proposal, which is formally known as the Strengthening the Relative Rights of People Working the Land policy, will bring about stability within in the agricultural sector. He is also of the view it will improve food production and food security.
