UFS students to meet on Monday | News Article

Students at the University of the Free State (UFS) are set to meet Monday amidst protests over registration and financial exclusion.

Student Representative Council (SRC) president, Katleho Lechoo, said earlier that they would meet to map out a way forward, following the arrest of 25 students.

Earlier former SRC president, Asive Dlanjwa, had warned students would shut down the university. Students and their leaders are accusing the management of the university of using violence against them by deploying private security to allegedly attack students.

However, the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the university, Francis Petersen, says they have since ordered an investigation into these claims - thus far no report has been given back to them.

Students and management are at loggerheads over registration fees and closing dates.

The management wants students who are not funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and that have a historical debt of over R20 000, to first reduce that debt before they can be allowed to register.

Students on the other hand have criticised them, citing financial constraints.

Students also want the university to allow them entrance to the campus to register.

Lechoo opted not to divulge any details about Monday’s meeting, but said they would announce the purpose of the meeting in due course.
