#NationalShutdown: NC police call for calm | News Article

The police in the Northern Cape urge residents to remain calm and to refrain from engaging in any protest actions.

This, after several days of escalating violent acts in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Provincial police spokesperson, Mashay Gamieldien, says they have noted numerous videos and messages that have been posted on social media platforms, calling for a shutdown in Kimberley. She warns no lawlessness will be tolerated in Kimberley and across the province.

"The SAPS in the province will not tolerate any situation where community members will participate and instiginate such actions in the province as is currently happening in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, where wanton criminality and looting is taking place.

"Business owners, mall and shopping complex managers are requested not to panic and close shops earlier than the advertised operating hours as this creates unnecessary panic which plays into the hands of these criminal elements," she said.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa, during his address on Monday night, warned that they will deploy the defence force to assist the police in affected areas and will fast-track the prosecution of those arrested.

He highlighted that whilst the right to peaceful protest is enshrined in the Constitution, no violent protests and act of criminality will be tolerated.
