World Athletics extends Olympic qualifying dates─── MORGAN PIEK 12:38 Fri, 05 Jun 2020
World Athletics, formerly known as the IAAF, has confirmed that athletes from across the globe will now be able to qualify for the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, as of 1 December.
The global showpiece was meant to start in the Land of the Rising Sun next month, however, in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, the summer games were postponed by a year.
With athletics grinding to a halt globally because of the virus athletes were left a couple of months short with regards to qualifying.
The new cut-off date for qualification will be 29 June 2021, and the games are set to take place from 23 July to 8 August.
Only the marathon and the 50km race walk will see a different qualifying cut of date. In these events, no time after 31 May will be accepted.
