Gasly claims first Grand Prix win | News Article

There was plenty of drama yesterday at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza as Pierre Gasly became the first French driver since 1996 to win a race.

A red flag and ten-second time penalty to the championship leader Lewis Hamilton added to the thrilling race, as for the first time in excess of 140 Grand Prixs a Mercedes, Red Bull or Ferrari driver didn’t make it onto the podium.

The 24-year-old Gasly said winning his first Grand Prix in Italy was something special as his team, AlphaTauri, is an Italian constructor.

“It’s amazing. Honestly, I’m lost for words right now.

“I’m still struggling to realise what’s happened for us.

“My first win in Formula 1. A couple of months ago I got my first podium in Brazil and then today it’s my first win, in Monza with AlphaTauri, which is an Italian team.

“It could not have been better and we worked so hard, day by day, race after race, after everything that happened to me in the last 18 months, I could not have hoped for a better way to get my first win.

The McLaren driver, Carlos Sainz, claimed second after crossing the line a split second behind Gasly, while the Racing Point man, Lance Stoll took third after making the most of a "free pit" during the red flag.

The teams remain in Italy this week for Sunday's San Marino Grand Prix.
