Van Niekerk, who had been battling with a recurring knee injury won the 400m for men in a respectable time of 45.58 sec.
Running in lane 4, Van Niekerk, made a slow start, and going into the final bend he was still running in 5th.
In the final 100m, Van Niekerk, cracked on the afterburners to beat Jochem Dobber of the Netherlands by 0.20 sec. Poland’s Karol Zalewki took bronze in 46.03 sec.
