The 20-year-old Phatutshedzo Maswanganyi could be a surprise inclusion in the South African team for the Olympic Games in Tokyo later this year.
The young and relatively unknown sprinter, who hails from Soweto, is currently studying at the University of Houston in Texas.
Over the weekend, Maswanganyi clocked a blistering time of 9.87 seconds over the 100m during the American Outdoor Track Championships.
He was denied the South African 100m record because of a 3.8m per second tailwind, which is 1,8m per second stronger than permitted.
Akani Simbine holds the South African 100m record at 9.89 seconds.
