Tatjana Schoenmaker won South Africa’s first medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo by claiming silver in the 100m breaststroke for women.
Schoenmaker was the favourite to claim gold, but both her and the world record holder, Lilly King, were stunned by the 17-year-old Lydia Jacoby of the USA.
Schoenmaker led with 15m to go before Jacoby snuck through to touch the wall in 1:04.95. The South African touched the wall in 1:05.22, while King had to settle for the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Chad le Clos has qualified for the men’s 200m butterfly final by winning the first semi-final in 1:55.06.
