No 200m butterfly medal for Le Clos─── MORGAN PIEK 07:05 Wed, 28 Jul 2021
There was no medal for South Africa’s most decorated Olympian, Chad le Clos, in the 200m butterfly for men at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The world record holder, Kristof Milak, of Hungary set a new Olympic record by winning the event comfortably in 1:51.25.
Le Clos started strong and was in contention for a medal but faded in the closing stages to ultimately take the 5th place in 1:54.93.
Meanwhile, Tatjana Schoenmaker, who won silver in the women’s 100m breaststroke yesterday, says she hopes her medal will inspire the nation.
“It's amazing and I don't think it will ever sink in.
“For me, I hope this just gives South Africa a little bit of hope.
“Obviously we are going through a tough time and if this can just encourage anyone in South Africa that there is light at the end of the tunnel, then I'll be very happy.”
Schoenmaker swims in heat 4 of the 200m breaststroke at 12:49 on Wednesday.
