Bloemfontein’s Wayde van Niekerk will finally get his long-awaited Olympic title defense underway in Tokyo.
The 400m world record holder and Olympic champion will be in action this weekend with the athletics competition starting at the 2020 Olympic Games.
Van Niekerk has seen limited action since claiming the title in Rio de Janeiro, due to his well-documented knee injury.
After recording a time of 43.48 seconds in Rio, Van Niekerk will certainly have a target on his back, but the question remains. Will be able to claim a second gold medal.
The 400m heats start at 3:45 on Sunday morning.
