I had to try to be a shining light - Van Niekerk─── MORGAN PIEK 08:01 Mon, 02 Aug 2021
Bloemfontein's Wayde van Niekerk will be in action on Monday during the semi-finals of the 400m for men at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The world record holder and reigning Olympic champion recorded the 12th fastest time during the heats to make it into the semi-finals.
Van Niekerk came third in his heat in a time of 44.56 seconds to book lane eight in the third semi.
Isaac Makwala of Botswana, who was based in Potchefstroom, will be running in the same heat in lane four.
Van Niekerk said that he wants to inspire the country.
“I was aiming for the top two but it didn't happen. But I'm still happy that I'm still at the Olympics.
“It's was nice. I had a very good 200m. The more I run the more I will be in control. I'm in the semi-finals so I must do more.
“It's definitely been a few tough years as my country is going through a lot. So, I had to try to be a shining light at this moment through fighting my injury and setbacks.”
This semi-final will get underway at 13:21 on Monday afternoon.
