It was not to be for South Africa's Akani Simbine in the final of the 100m sprint for men at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Simbine, who was one the pre-Olympic favourites for gold, had to settle for fourth in a time of 9.93 seconds.

Italy's Marcell Jacobs caused one of the biggest upsets in recent Olympic history by winning the blue-ribbon event in a title of 9.84 seconds.

The American, Fred Kerley, took the silver in 9.84 seconds, with Canada's André de Grasse who was 0.05 seconds slower to clinch the bronze.

A clearly disappointed Simbine said that Jacobs deserved the win.

“It's just a race. It's a final. The better man won it on the day and I'm really happy for Jacobs.

“I'm disappointed in myself, but I'm happy I could make the final.

“We still have the four by one coming up.

“I'm looking forward to it. I just need some time to gather myself before I get back into it.”

Simbine will have another crack for gold later in the week in the men's 4 x 100m relay. South Africa are the world champions in the event and are favourite for gold.
