The pole vaulter, who studies at the University of Stellenbosch, claimed the gold on day one of the competition after missing with her first attempt at 3.80m.

She regrouped and managed to clear all the following heights and eventually won with an attempt of 4.15m to clinch the gold.

Reinstorf conceded that she headed to Kenya without the expectation of winning a medal.

“I’m so happy, so grateful for this. It’s my first international competition and I’m so happy it turned out this way.

“I honestly didn’t think I’ll get a medal.

“It’s actually been nice conditions. The wind was also not bothering me. It was neither too cold nor too warm.”

Sadly, the top-ranked shot-putter, DJ Liebenberg, from Bloemfontein failed to reach the final of the shot put. Liebenberg finished 13th in the competition with a best effort of 17.69m.

This was just 15cm short of securing a spot in the final.
