The blind Paralympian from Bloemfontein, Louzanne Coetzee, has won the silver medal in the T11 1500m for women at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

The reigning world champion, Monica Olivia Rodriguez Saavedra of Mexico, won the gold in a world record time of 4:35.40.

Coetzee and her guide, Estean Badenhorst, crossed the line in 4:40.96 for what is her first-ever Paralympic medal and the third for South Africa at the Games.

Kenya's Nany Koech, claimed the bronze in 4:45.58. During the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Coetzee, was disqualified due to a tug by her then guide.

Coetzee's time is not only a personal best over the distance, but it's officially a new African and South African record.

Coetzee expressed her delight with earning her first-ever medal in major international competitions.

“I can’t believe it. I have been competing for eight years and this is my first medal. “I’m just overwhelmed. I couldn’t have asked for a better race, a better guide, better preparation, I’m just very thankful for how everything went down.”

Coetzee will have another crack at a medal when she and Claus Kempen compete in the marathon on Sunday. Kempen will guide Coetzee during the marathon. He has previously guided Coetzee in the Soweto, Berlin and London Marathons.
