Verstappen wins in Baku for the first time─── MORGAN PIEK 07:45 Mon, 13 Jun 2022
The reigning Formula 1 world champion, Max Verstappen, has extended his lead at the top of the driver’s championship after winning the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku for the first time.
Verstappen beat his Red Bull teammate and winner of the Monaco Grand Prix, Sergio Perez, as the team also extended their lead at the top of the constructor’s championship.
George Russell of Mercedes rounded off the podium with his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, taking fourth.
Verstappen said it all worked out well for them.
“I think today we had incredible pace in the car. We could really look after the tyres and we could chip away at it, pass for the lead," said Verstappen.
“But obviously also maybe a tiny bit lucky with the retirements, but nevertheless I think our car was really quick today so I could have closed that gap, so then you have a race on your hands, but overall, really happy with the balance of the car today.”
It was another dismal day for Ferrari with Carlos Sainz having to retire due to a hydraulic failure, while Charles Leclerc retired because of a power-unit failure.
The drivers head to Montreal this week for the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
