The Proteas netball captain, Bongi Msomi, and the para-swimmer, Christian Sadie, have been named as the South African flag bearers for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The quadrennial event will officially get underway on Thursday.

Thursday will also mark exactly a year until the 2023 Netball World Cup will be staged in South Africa, and Msomi is expected to lead the Proteas during the event in Cape Town.

Sadie recently won silver in SB7 100m breaststroke at the World Para Swimming Championships in Portugal.

“Congratulations to Bongi and Christian on their appointment,” said Lwandile Simelane, the Team SA Chef de Mission.

“Both exemplify the spirit of the Games and both are dedicated and high-achieving athletes. They competed at the 2018 Games in Gold Coast and have done themselves and their country proud on the international stage on numerous occasions over the years.

“This is a ground-breaking Games for Team SA and we are proud to be able to hand Bongi and Christian the honour of carrying the flag on such an auspicious occasion as the opening ceremony,”

The Commonwealth Games opening ceremony will begin at 21:55 on Thursday evening.
