India too strong for the Proteas─── MORGAN PIEK 08:24 Thu, 15 Dec 2022
The Proteas women’s team suffered their third straight defeat of the FIH Women’s Nations Cup being played in Valencia, Spain on Thursday.
South Africa was beaten 2-0 by India in their final Pool game which saw the Proteas end at the bottom of Pool B.
Deep Grace Ekka opened the scoring in the 13th minute by scoring from a penalty corner, while Gurit Kaur doubled the score in the 58th minute from another PC.
The scoreline could very easily have been 3-0 had it not been for a brilliant penalty stroke save by the South African goalkeeper, Anelle van Deventer, who was simply outstanding in the box.
Ekka, who was named the player of the match, said it was important for them to convert their penalties corner when they came in the match.
"Penalty corners were something we talked about and practised a lot before this game because we hadn’t executed them the way we wanted to in the first two games.
"We are a hard-working unit and we will come prepared for Ireland in the semi-finals."
South Africa will face Italy at 10:00 on Friday in their next game at the Nations Cup.
