South Africa's Brad Binder had to settle for second on Sunday during the Spanish GP in Jerez, Spain, after leading for almost the entire race.

Binder started the race in 4th on the grind and during the first lap he moved to 1st, but the race was red-flagged due to a big crash on turn two which ruled Miguel Olivera out. Olivera dislocated his shoulder in the crash.

The race was restarted with the original grid positions.

Binder once again shot to first and led almost the entire race, however, the reigning MotoGP World Champion, Pecco Bagnaia, of Italy overtook the South African with just laps remaining.

The Potchefstroom-born Binder fought to the bitter end, but Bagnaia once again proved his class by holding off the late surge by the KTM rider.

Binder's teammate, Jack Miller from Australia, who for a large part rode in second, rounded off the podium in third.

"Today was fantastic to finish a main race again - the last two I messed up," said Binder after his second place finish.

"So happy to have gotten a solid podium today, it was nice to be out front and lead the race, but I think I cooked it a bit with three or four laps to go.

"Thank you to my team, thank you to everybody for your support, we try again next week."

Binder has moved up to third on the overall rider standings behind the first placed Bagnaia and second placed Marco Bezzecchi.

The next stop for the MotoGP circuit will be in Lemans, France, for the French GP on 14 May.
