The win was Verstappen’s sixth in a row for Red Bull to equal the record of McLaren of 11 victories in a row, while it was also the team’s first win at Silverstone in 11 years.

Lando Norris of McLaren took second for his first-ever Formula 1 podium in his home race, while his countryman, Lewis Hamilton, rounded off the podium in third.

Norris got off to a flying start to take the lead immediately and he led the race for the first few laps much to the delight of the cheering British fans.

Verstappen said it wasn’t the easiest victory especially as Norris forced the two-time World Champion to fight for the lead.

“Of course, I’m very happy that we won again,” said Verstappen.

“I mean it’s now 11 wins in a row for the team, I think that’s pretty incredible, but it wasn’t straightforward.

“I was doing a bit of drifting on Thursday with marketing, and it felt like I was doing that also in the start, which wasn’t very good – it was very bad.

“We’ll look into that, because I think the last few starts were actually a lot better, and today wasn’t that great.

“But at least it made it a bit more exciting, I had to push for it. Lando didn’t really put up a fight, he was very nice to me, but then he actually came back again in the DRS, so he had a lot of pace and he did very well.”

Verstappen now holds a 99 point lead over his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez who is second in the Drivers Championship standings.

The next race will be on 23 July at the Hungaroring for the Hungarian Grand Prix
