Binder out of Catalunya GP after Bagnaia crashes─── KAYLA BARKER 15:51 Sun, 03 Sep 2023
Current log leader, Pecco Bagnaia, sustained injuries after crashing out of the Catalunya GP on Sunday, the 3rd of September, in Spain. Potchefstroom-born Brad Binder unfortunately settled for a DNF this weekend after driving over the Italian's leg.
The World Champion, Pecco Bagnaia, set a new track record on Saturday in the qualifying rounds to claim pole position for today’s race. Unfortunately the pole position was somewhat in vain after the Ducati rider crashed out horribly in the first lap.
The riders attempted to avoid the injured title leader and all but KTM-rider Brad Binder managed to do so. Binder’s tyres hit Pecco’s legs causing injury to the Italian.
The race was then red-flagged and the conscious Bagnaia was taken to the track’s medical centre to be treated. Luckily his injuries were not as bad as initially feared.
Unfortunately for Binder, he had to settle for a DNF despite hoping to claim a victory this week; a victory that would ultimately increase his chances of winning the title this season.
Alongside both Binder and Bagnaia being out, Italian rider, Enea Bastianini also suffered a fall where he might have sustained fractures, seeing him also exiting the race this week.
Apirila Racing’s Aleix Espargaro claimed the victory after the race was restarted and after he managed to win the sprint race on Saturday this was definitely a sweet victory despite his fellow driver's misfortunes.
