The 24-year-old produced a superb performance at Scotstoun Stadium, clocking 19.96 seconds to secure the gold medal despite recording the slowest reaction time out of the blocks. Dambile accelerated brilliantly through the bend before powering down the home straight to leave the rest of the field trailing in his wake.

It capped a remarkable few days for the South African, who had already stamped his authority on the competition by winning his semi-final in 19.80 seconds – the second-fastest time ever recorded at the Commonwealth Games. That followed his personal best of 19.74 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Doha, where he collected his maiden victory on the elite international circuit.

His winning margin in the final underlined just how dominant he was. Nigeria’s Udodi Onwuzurike claimed silver in a season’s best 20.09 seconds, but still finished 0.13 seconds behind Dambile, who looked composed and in complete control throughout the race.

The victory confirms Dambile’s rapid rise in world athletics. Ranked fourth in the world this season, he has quickly established himself among the elite and appears destined to challenge for even greater honours in the years ahead.

Speaking after securing his place in the final, Dambile made his intentions clear.

“I didn’t come here feeling pressure. I came here with one goal, and that was to win the gold medal.”

He delivered exactly that.

Reflecting on his triumph, Dambile described the achievement as the reward for months of hard work.

“This is a beautiful moment. It’s something I’ve been working towards all season. Winning the South African championships was part of the journey, and everything built up to this moment. To achieve it here, where it matters most, means everything.”At

The South African said he deliberately ignored the clock during the race and focused solely on the result.

“I just wanted to stay relaxed and execute my race. I wasn’t thinking about the time. All I wanted was the gold medal. Once I came off the bend, I stayed calm and I could feel myself pulling away from the rest of the field.”

Dambile also praised the team behind his rapid improvement this season, crediting his support structure for helping him reach another level.

“I’ve got a great team around me. They’ve guided me one race at a time and prepared me perfectly. Competing in the Diamond League was all part of the plan leading up to these Games. I trusted the process, focused on my training and believed in what they were telling me.”

Despite already standing on top of the Commonwealth podium, Dambile believes there is still plenty more to come.

“My goal is to become the best 200m runner in the world. I know there are still areas where I can improve, so I’ll stay patient and continue working with my team.”

He added that carrying the hopes of South Africans inspired him throughout the competition.

“When I walked into the stadium, I knew I was representing the whole country. I had my family, my team and South Africa behind me. This medal means so much to everyone, and I’m proud that I could do it for them.”

Dambile’s performances in Glasgow have confirmed what many in athletics already suspected – South Africa has unearthed another world-class sprinter capable of competing with the very best on the global stage.
