UFS  booked a semi-final against log leaders UJ after claiming Free State bragging rights with a convincing 60-46 victory over newcomers Central University of Technology in the first-ever Bloemfontein derby.

For CUT, it was another valuable lesson in their first Varsity Netball campaign, while the experienced Kovsies showed exactly why they remain one of the competition’s traditional powerhouses.

The five-time champions were ruthless from the outset, making the most of their opportunities in the shooting circle while capitalising on CUT’s handling errors. Kovsies established a commanding 21-7 lead after the opening 15 minutes and never looked back.

The second quarter proved equally difficult for CUT, as Kovsies turned up the intensity and extended their advantage to 36-14 at half-time.

To their credit, CUT responded strongly after the break. The newcomers showed greater composure and began putting pressure on the Kovsies, with important defensive interventions from Tshegofatso Makoko and Nena Radebe helping to disrupt the opposition’s flow.

CUT won the third quarter 19-13, but the damage had already been done. Kovsies maintained their composure in the final period to close out a 60-46 victory.

Megan Erasmus was named player of the match for the Kovsies.

For CUT, however, the campaign has provided a significant platform for growth. Their introduction to Varsity Netball has already delivered memorable moments, and the experience gained against one of the tournament’s most established teams will be invaluable going forward.

While Kovsies celebrated, the NWU Eagles suffered a major setback in their title defence.

The Potchefstroom side went down 54-47 to Maties in a thrilling contest, ending their round-robin campaign with plenty to consider ahead of their semi-final against UP-Tuks.

Maties controlled much of the opening half, taking an 18-10 lead before going into the interval 29-20 ahead. NWU refused to surrender their crown without a fight, however, producing a spirited comeback in the third quarter.

The Eagles reduced the deficit to just two goals at 38-36 with 15 minutes remaining and then levelled the scores with 12 minutes on the clock.

The momentum appeared to be shifting in NWU’s favour, but a late power play did not produce the desired result. Maties capitalised, regained control and held their nerve to secure one of the biggest wins of the tournament.

Lize Rossouw was named player of the match.

NWU now face the challenge of recovering quickly, with UP-Tuks standing between the defending champions and another Varsity Netball final.

Tuks enter the knockout phase with considerable confidence after completing an impressive weekend. Following their victory over UJ on Sunday, the hosts backed it up with a comprehensive 70-50 win against Wits.

Skyla Eley was named player of the match as Tuks dominated from the opening whistle, leading 25-13 after the first quarter and 39-26 at half-time.

UJ, meanwhile, finished top of the standings after beating Madibaz 49-41. That result sets up a semi-final against UFS Kovsies, ensuring another intriguing battle between two teams with serious title ambitions.

With the round-robin phase now complete, the pressure goes up another level. UFS Kovsies will need to draw on their experience against UJ, while NWU must regroup quickly after their defeat to Maties.

For CUT, the journey may have ended before the semi-finals, but their debut campaign has laid the foundation for what could be an exciting future in Varsity Netball.

The semi-finals now promise two contrasting battles - UJ against the experienced Kovsies, and a wounded NWU Eagles side facing an in-form UP-Tuks outfit on home soil.

The venues for the final are yet to be confirmed.
